Presque Isle and Winchester, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Reports

Welcome! There is a place in Wisconsin's famed Northwoods called Presque Isle and Winchester, a vast swath of forest and glacial lake country that deserves to be named "Wisconsin's Last Wilderness."

77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams offer a four season vacationland that really only begins to tell the story. The top attraction is the natural splendor of the Northwoods, with a location that is immediately adjacent to Michigan's sprawling Ottawa National Forest and Wisconsin's 20,000 plus acres of Northern Highland State Forest

Presque Isle, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Conditions Reports
All Wisconsin Snowmobile Trails are Closed. However, for snowmobile clubs, the work of maintaining and securing snowmobile trails is a year around obligation. The NEW 2013 Wisconsin Act 142 will change how EVERY snowmobiler will look at snowmobile clubs in Wisconsin. Take a moment and review the new law at the AWSC Website http://www.awsc.org Thank you for supporting snowmobiling and until next year…. “Think Snow”.

The End of the Snowmobile Season is upon us!… But NOT YET get ready for the last weekend of March with "mother nature" bringing us MORE SNOW! The Presque Isle/Winchester Trail System is still in GOOD condition, but the sun is taking its toll. You can expect road crossings to be dry, corners are getting iced and any brown snow is going to disappear fast. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have reduced grooming to match conditions, but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. The Vilas County Trail System will remain open until midnight March 31st…REMEMBER… Ride ‘Right’, Stay tuned and “Think Snow!”

Mid-March usually marks the end of the Snowmobile Season… But NOT YET! The Presque Isle/Winchester Trail System is still in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition and it’s the same in all surrounding areas! The only caveat to perfect riding is the logging on Corridor 6 East of Presque Isle, and the logging on Trail 11 North that has the Michigan section of the trail closed. Detours are clearly marked and are short. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have reduced grooming to match conditions, but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. REMEMBER… Ride ‘Right’, Stay tuned and “Think Snow!”

Detours are clearly marked and are short. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a regular nightly grooming schedule but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. Week after week the trails in the “North Country” continue to remain near EXCELLENT condition. Our Presque Isle/Winchester Trail system in in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. The only caveat to perfect riding is the logging on Corridor 6 East of Presque Isle, and the logging on Trail 11 North that has the Michigan section of the trail closed and a short section in Wisconsin 11 disrupted with timber processing. What a great weekend we had and the week looks equally as good. Both areas are clearly marked and have short, clear detours. The entire ‘Northland Area’ is home to excellent riding right now. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a regular nightly grooming schedule but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. REMEMBER… Ride on a lake ONLY If it’s marked! Incredible! That’s was the comment from the Snowmobilers I met on Corridor 6 last night. They had ridden 80 miles after unloading at the motel and they couldn’t believe how great the conditions were! After a month of good snow and trail conditioning Presque Isle/Winchester Trails are rated VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT! The only caveat to perfect riding is the logging on Corridor 6 East of Presque Isle, and the logging on Trail 11 North that has the Michigan section of the trail closed and a short section in Wisconsin 11 disrupted with timber processing. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a regular nightly grooming schedule but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. REMEMBER… Ride on a lake ONLY If it’s marked! Snow conditions in Vilas County are looking super for the New Year. Here in the Presque Isle/Winchester area trails are 100% groomed and rated VERY GOOD. There are however, a couple of trail problems that should be noted… Trail 11 North is closed in Michigan due to logging, with a short logging section in Wisconsin. The Spruce swamp on Trail 14 West has been groomed but it will need a few more passes. All other trails as well as surrounding trails are in VERY GOOD condition. The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a regular nightly grooming schedule but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. REMEMBER… Ride on a lake ONLY If it’s marked ! Snow conditions in Vilas County are looking super for the New Year. Here in the Presque Isle/Winchester area trails are 98% groomed and rated VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. There is however, one short section of Trail #14 near the Iron County line that hasn’t been groomed. That section has a Spruce swamp will be covered on Tues (12/31) with the groomer. But because there exists about a ¼ mile of non-groomed swamp we can’t call the trails Excellent… yet! The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a regular nightly grooming schedule but you can expect to encounter their equipment any time of the day. REMEMBER… Ride on a lake ONLY If it’s marked ! Welcome to the first full week of the 2013-2014 Snowmobile Season. Presque Isle/Winchester Trails are completely open with a few sections nongroomed... Trail 14 West has a spruce swamp that is too soft for our groomer as is a short section of 6 East. All sections are clear and passable with snowmobile. We are rating our trails as FAIR with hopes of having everything GOOD to VERY GOOD by the weekend. REMEMBER... Some area lakes still have open water! If it's not marked... stay off! IF YOU ride proceed with caution, expect some bumps, early trail conditions and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails (conditions permitting) both during daylight and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”! We are announcing the Official opening of the Presque Isle/Winchester and Vilas County Trails. Vilas County State funded Snowmobile trails will open Friday December 13th with the exception of Phelps trails. This is ahead of the scheduled opening of Tuesday December 17th due to the diligence of the volunteers in area clubs brushing and preparing trails after the snow/ice storm last week. The Phelps trail system will remain closed until further notice. Early riders need to proceed with caution. Many area lakes still have open water! Trail sections that pass through wet areas MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENTLY FROZEN. Remember, IF YOU ride proceed with caution, expect rough trails, little grooming, minimal snow base and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails (conditions permitting) both during daylight and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!
