Marquette Country of Big Bay, Champion, Gwinn, Chocolay, Ishpeming, Marquette, Michigamme, Negaunee, Republic, Michigan, Cross Country Trail Information

Marquette Country is fast becoming the destination of choice for tourists and visitors desiring to have it all in one spot. Not only do we have every type of recreation available to us year round, (including winter surfing on Lake Superior), but our diverse restaurants located in our historic downtown buildings offer a wide assortment of local fare.

Located in the center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Marquette was recently named one of Top Ten Destinations in the world to visit.

Fall offers up a fine display of splendor with brilliant color throughout the county. A great way to get in touch with the fall color is by hiking or biking on the many trails throughout the county. If you prefer to drive you can print out your ready-made fall color tour guide from our web site.

Add all of the above to the endless festivals and events that are happening, from The Blues Fest, Seafood Fest, Superior Bike Fest, Noquemanon Ski Race, Ski Jumping and Suicide Bowl, Ore to Shore Bike Race and the UP200 Sled Dog Race, WE HAVE IT ALL!

*Noquemanon: We will be grooming up from the NMU Dome to Forestville this morning. Hopefully loosening up the hard pack on the way up. Then the bombie is being shipped up to South Camp Road and we will groom from there to Deer Lake. Interior Loops in Forestville will be touched up with the snowmobile. *Blueberry Ridge: With the lack of snow we are holding off on the over grooming of BBR. At this time it is not possible to groom the tracks and provide you with the desired results. We will be loosening the skate lane on Friday evening but please do not look for great combing as the surface is too solid. If we don’t get snow before Monday evening we will be tilling the entire system on Monday to try and refurbish the surface and tracks. We ask your patience after that as we do not expect conditions to be any where near new snow quality grooming. As many of you know, we have an owl that is nesting somewhere nearby the lighted loop. This magnificent bird is a little bit of a pain to some skiers as of late. Please be aware of it’s presence and tread lightly. It has made contact with at least one skier. Let’s hope that the owl is a Snowy owl that is bringing snow down from the north. Ski on… BBR groomers *Saux Head: Groomed and tracked on Wednesday, January 27th . *Fit Strip: Set to be groomed every weekend. *Big Bay Pathway: The entire trail is looking the best ever for the Honey Bear. The trail is packed and leveled down wide to maximize two set of tracks throughout the system. The Ridgeline is packed and leveled over the rock with our hallmark view. Save the date: February 27 for the annual Honey Bear Classic: 15 and 30K events over exciting terrain. *Al Quaal: Teal Lake Trail Olympic Trail and Noquemanon section of Al Quaal have been groomed and tracked and in excellent condition as of Tuesday. *Valley Spur: The trails are groomed most everyday or as conditions warrant. *Noquemanon: Noque groomed from Forestville to 510 as well as all loops were groomed and track set Monday night/Tuesday morning. Tourist Park is steadily being worked on and will be in great condition soon. The Noque from 19k mark to 510 (24k mark) received up to a foot of snow during the recent storm and will be soft. If you skied yesterday or are going out today you may see the Bombi on the trail. We are performing some test passes to see if snow depths are appropriate. Most grooming is done by volunteers and there are only a few. Grooming is fun and a great way to be involved. A few more groomers could make much better skiing for all of us. Let us know if you would like to volunteer. *Blueberry Ridge: All loops groomed and tracked on Tuesday night. Next grooming scheduled for New Years Eve. *Saux Head: All loops groomed and tracked on Tuesday the 29th. *Fit Strip: Groomed and tracked Sunday the 27th. *Big Bay Pathway: Will be groomed after the first of the year. *Valley Spur: The trails are groomed most everyday or as conditions warrant. News From Valley Spur: New Track Truck Groomer Last year’s trial lease of the GMC Jimmy track truck groomer proved successful. In fact it was so successful that the Friends of Valley Spur have purchased their own truck this year. As you ski the trails, you’ll probably have a chance to see our Green GMC Jimmy track truck in motion. Our groomers are in heaven on the trails now! New Ladies Ski Group Come join the newly formed Ladies-only ski group on Tuesdays. The group meets at the lodge at 4pm. Every Tuesday. Headlamps advised in case you stay on the trail a bit late. Socializing in the lodge afterwards. Snowshoe Trails & Thursday Group Snowshoe group is meeting again this year on Thursdays at 5:30pm. Bring your headlamps and meet at the lodge. Trail Report December 29, 2009 *Noquemanon: 12.29.09. Noque groomed from Forestville to 510 as well as all loops were groomed and track set Monday night/Tuesday morning. Tourist Park (2k mark) to Forestville was rolled and corduroy laid down. There was too much slush on the pond to get the Ginzu across. This should freeze today allowing track setting next time it is groomed. The Noque from 19k mark to 510 (24k mark) received up to a foot of snow during the recent storm and will be soft. If you ski today you may see the Bombi on the trail. We are performing some test passes to see if snow depths are appropriate. *Blueberry Ridge: All loops were scheduled to be groomed after the snow and wind stopped yesterday *Saux Head: All loops groomed yesterday but snow was still falling so some areas may be drifted over. *Fit Strip: 12.23.09 No report this morning. We will re-post as soon as a report is received. *Valley Spur: The trails are groomed most everyday or as conditions warrant. For the latest trail information visit the Valley Spur Website at www.valleyspur.org or call 906.387.4918. *Big Bay Pathway: Will be groomed after the first of the year. *Noquemanon & Forestville Interior Loops: 12.23.09. The Noquemanon and all loops were groomed and tracked on Sunday night/Monday morning. Special attention was again given to the edges of the classic tracks. All trail edges have been driven over with a snowmobile prior to grooming. This is a considerable effort by our volunteers but makes for a better classic pole set. The Noque was groomed from the Forestville to Co. Rd. 510 Tuesday afternoon. The snow base is still too thin to allow for use of the large grooming equipment. We received an inch of very dry fluffy snow Monday and again Tuesday. This has skied in nicely over a good hard base. The classic tracks are still in good shape and grooming old snow with the snowmobile often hurts the classic track in this situation. As such we have attempted to protect the base and did not re-set them. Trails were excellent yesterday and should be again today. We are also working on crossing the ponds. Thank you to the volunteers that have been snowshoeing to pack down for a safe snowmobile crossing. We drove the ponds Monday and packed a wide path that should allow grooming as early as today and we will do so as soon as possible. In an effort improve access to the Forestville Trailhead we ask that you follow the one way signs. As you cross the R/R tracks off of the Forestville Rd. proceed straight across. At the next intersection turn left at the arrowhead then follow the signs. When leaving the Trailhead parking lot turn left then take a right at the intersection. We believe the one-way traffic pattern will improve safety and make the approach to the Trailhead easier for non-4 wheel drive vehicles. Thank you. *Blueberry Ridge: 12.23.09 Hello fellow skiers: I just want to let everyone know what is up at Blueberry for Christmas grooming. I have stepped back grooming just a little in the last few days because of the base conditions. Monday night I groomed everything and found that the tracks are getting harder and harder to set. I believe the skiing quality will go down if we continue to beat the 4 inch base any further. Unless the conditions warrant more grooming we will be waiting for the storm to come before we groom any further so that you may continue to enjoy BBR. Some of you have asked about the Bombi and when it may arrive and get to work. We have agreed with the DNR to not groom with the Bombi unless we have a one foot base. As soon as we can use it it will be running. In the mean time Mike and I will be working very hard to give you great trails. I hope you have enjoyed them so far. The storm is coming in on Thursday Eve and is to continue through Christmas Day. We will be grooming as soon as it stops or slows on Friday evening. If we groom the wet snow too soon we will end up a rock hard icy unworkable surface and we dont want that. Please be assured that it is the goal of NTN to provide you with the best skiing opportunity that we can. May you all have a Very Merry Christmas and safe travels to you. *Saux Head: 12.23.09 Groomed and tracked last night and the conditions are excellent. *Fit Strip: 12.23.09 Tracked and groomed on Saturday.
